Ada Ethel Sarah Cleggett (née Gentle; 27 January 1885 – 8 December 1995) was an Australian supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). At the time of death, she was the oldest living person in Australia.
Biography[]
Cleggett was born in Booleroo Centre, South Australia, Australia, on 27 January 1885. Her parents were George Gentle (1848-1917) and Maria Elizabeth Langford (1858-1928). She had 7 siblings: Arthur James (1883-1960), Albert George (1886-1963), Clara Beatrice (1890-?), Frank Barrier (1891-1968), Bessie Hilda Adelaide (1891-1945), Walter Robert (1896-1981) and Charles Robert (1897-1977).
In 1911, she married Thomas Cleggett (1883-1977) in Broken Hill, New South Wales. They had at least 5 children, including Robert Gordon Cleggett (1908-?), Mary Gentle (1912-1986), Frank James (1915-2003) and Thomas Charles (1916-1992). On 19 November 1993, Cleggett became the oldest living person in Australia following the death of 110-year old Kit St. Clair. On her 109th birthday, she had 5 living children, 18 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
Cleggett died in Cummins, South Australia, Australia, on 8 December 1995, at the age of 110 years, 315 days.
