Ada Roe (née Giddings; 6 February 1858 – 11 January 1970)[1] was a British supercentenarian who was the world's oldest living person from the death of Haruno Shimada on 31 December 1969, until her own death on 11 January 1970. She was the last known surviving person born in the 1850s.
Biography
Ada Roe was born as Ada Giddings in Islington, England, and later moved to Lowestoft, where she ran a dairy shop for over 75 years, continuing to help at the age of 110.[2] She married William Roe in 1885 and had three children.
She attributed her longevity to a good childhood.[3] At the time of her death, Roe was also the oldest British person ever.
Ada Roe died in Lowestoft, on 11 January 1970, at the age of 111 years, 339 days.
After her death, the title of oldest living person went to Josefa Salas Mateo of Spain. Roe's successor as the oldest living British person, Alice Stevenson, would herself go on to become the oldest person ever to have resided in the UK (British-born Betsy Baker was older at the time), reaching the age of 112 years, 39 days.
