Ahmet Gashi (1 September 1908 – 10 May 2016) was a Kosovoan centenarian who was the oldest known living person in Kosovo at the time of his death. He was also the last surviving person from Kosovo to be born in the 1900s.
Biography[]
Ahmet Gashi was born in the municipality of Podujevo, Pristina District, Ottoman Empire (present-day Kosovo) on 1 September 1908. He was 4 years old when Albania was declared a state.
He thought that the secret of his longevity was that he drank sheep's milk. He always had sheep. He was a miner and a farmer by profession. Gashi, at the time when he was 104, had over 60 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He had four sons and five daughters. His oldest child was 30 years younger than him, while some of his descendants live outside Kosovo.
He became the oldest known living person in Kosovo, following the death of 109-year-old Fatime Ahmeti on 3 September 2015.
Ahmet Gashi died in the village of Dobri Do, Podujevo municipality, Pristina District, Kosovo on 10 May 2016 at the age of 107 years, 252 days. Following his death, then-106-year-old Sherife Ninaj became the oldest known living person in Kosovo.
