Aleatha Katura Fraser (née Smith; 24 August 1917 – 13 June 2022) was a centenarian who was the oldest known living person in British Virgin Islands at the time of her death.

Biography[]

Aleatha Fraser was born in Tortola, British Virgin Islands on 24 August 1917, the fourth of 11 children born to Joseph A. Smith and Christalia Alvina Smith. She grew up in Carrot Bay. Her mother died when she was young.

She married George W. Fraser in 1942. The couple had 11 children: Dorothy (now deceased), Roosevelt, Ashield, George, Ione, Grace, James, Tama, Lenny, Daisy and Carmen. Her husband died in 1958.

In 1965, Fraser moved to the United States and began working at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, where she remained for 18 years until her retirement, when returned to the Virgin Islands.

On her 100th birthday in 2017, the Queen Elizabeth II sent flowers and a card and the Premier of the Virgin Islands Orlando Smith presented she with a $5,000 grant from the Government of the Virgin Islands.

She became the oldest known living person in British Virgin Islands following the death of 104 year-old William Rhymer on 23 October 2021.

Aleatha Fraser died in Carrot Bay, Tortola, British Virgin Islands on 13 June 2022, at the age of 104 years, 293 days.
