Alfons Tomke (born 16 July 1918) is a Polish centenarian and activist of the Union of Poles in Germany.

Biography[]

He is the son of Mary and Francis and had eight siblings. He grew up in a very patriotic family, both parents belonged to the Union of Poles in Germany As a 19-year-old he took part in the First Congress of the Union of Poles in Germany in Berlin (1938). In 1938, before being drafted into the army, he worked for half a year in the Reich near Szwerin on the construction of the canal. There he fell ill and was taken to the hospital. In March 1939 he was released and returned home. He received a pension for incapacity for work, and yet he was conscripted into the army. In 1943 he was sent to the barracks, then to the Eastern Front. He spent the period of bloody fighting in the rear, where he dug ditches and guarded transports. There he fell ill again. Transported deep into Germany, he lay in a hospital. Then he went to the vicinity of Leningrad,where he was taken prisoner. He spent 5 years in a labor camp – he worked in a mine. There he suffered another accident. Despite this, he was not released. After 5 years in 1949 he returned to Berlin. He then returned home. He found a job in the municipal office. From 1962 he worked in the bank until his retirement

He is a member of the Union of Veterans and Repressed Persons.
