In 1939, at the age of 26, he joined the municipal fire station in Wiedikon (today Protection and Rescue Zurich, Guard South), and served there for almost 40 years.

He married Anna (born 1920) in 1943. The couple had two daughters. In 2021, the couple celebrated 77 years of marriage.

In February 2013, he celebrated his 100th birthday and became a centenarian.

At the time of his 105th birthday in 2018, he had two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
