Alice Mae Hoffs (née Brower; 25 February 1902 – 31 October 2012) was an American supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).
Biography[]
Alice Hoffs was born in Hamilton, Michigan, USA on 25 February 1902. Her parents were Herman Brower and Aaltje "Alice" (née Klomparens) Brower. She had six siblings.
She graduated Cum Laude in 1923 from Hope College, and taught school in Wayland, Michigan for two years. During her summers, she worked in her father's bank in Hamilton.
She married Marinus Adrian Hoffs in Allegan, Michigan, USA on 31 March 1927. The couple had at least three daughters Louise Peppel (born c.1930), Carole Bos (born c.1933), and Jayne Cummings (1939–2018).
The family moved to Lake Odessa, Michigan, where he established his medical practice. After Dr. Hoffs' death in 1971, she enjoyed traveling with her family, visiting the Holy Land, Greece, Turkey, Wales, England, Germany, Poland, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Nassau.
She served the Grand Rapids District Women's Society, was involved her local church's mission program and was the Central United Methodist Church organist for 45 years. In 1975, she moved to Friendship Village in Kalamazoo, and served on various committees, and was treasurer of the Resident Council, as well as helping on the Music Committee at Friendship Village.
There was also a history of longevity in her family: her father lived to be 91, her sister Juliet Schutmaat lived to be 102, and her sister Bertha Van Zyl lived to be 99.
Alice Hoffs died in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA on 31 October 2012 at the age of 110 years, 249 days. She was survived by three daughters Louise Peppel, Carole Bos, and Jayne Cummings; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Her age was verified by Anson Davis, Ilias Leivaditis, and Waclaw Jan Kroczek, and (posthumously) validated by the GRG on 9 June 2016.
