Helen Alice (Alice) Horne (6 February 1907 – 26 February 2016)[1] was a British centenarian, who was the oldest woman in East Lancashire, England at the time of her death.
Biography[]
Alice Horne was born Helen Alice Horne on 6 February 1907 in Scotland. She survived polio as a child and was buried under the rubble of a matchstick factory in World War II in Liverpool. At age 50, in 1957, an accident left her wheelchair-bound. She learned to swim aged 70. After that, she joined the Disabled Association for Sport and took part in bowling, javelin and darts events. In 2005, she was awarded the honour of Freedom of the Borough in recognition of her extensive charity work. That same year, she was attacked by burglars who wanted to steal from her home.
She died on 26 February 2016 at the age of 109 years, 20 days, after her health began to decline.[3]
