Alice Katherine Sanders (née Matos; 12 May 1897 – 7 November 2007) was a Portuguese-American supercentenarian and one of the last survivors of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. She is also the oldest person ever born in the Azores archipelago.

Biography

Alice Catarina Matos was born in Sao Jorge Island, Azores archipelago, Portugal, on 12 May 1897. Her family emigrated to Half Moon Bay, California in 1903 when she was 6 years old. The April 1906 San Francisco earthquake, which occurred a few weeks prior to her ninth birthday, was a traumatic experience to her family, since they believed the end of the world had come.

In 1912, the Matos family moved to Gustine, where Alice met Clarence Leonard Sanders. The couple married on Christmas Day 1913. Clarence and Alice had two children, Marvin and Isabel.

After living in Oregon, the Sanders family settled in Atwater in 1922 and later moved to a home on Shaffer Road in Winton. In 1947, they bought farm property on Buhach Road and Palm Avenue in the Amsterdam area of Merced County and operated a dairy and grew almonds with their son, Marvin and his family. In 1962, Alice and Clarence moved to a home on Heights Avenue in Atwater. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1963, just a year before Clarence died.

Sanders died in Merced, California, USA, on 7 November 2007, at the age of 110 years, 179 days.[1] [2]
