Alice Schaufelberger-Hunziker (11 January 1908 – 16 November 2020) was a Swiss supercentenarian whose age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) on 12 May 2021. She had been Switzerland's oldest living person since the death of Frieda Binz-Schoch on 28 December 2017 until her death.
Biography
Alice Schaufelberger-Hunziker was born in Reitnau, Canton of Aargau, Switzerland on 11 January 1908. She was the youngest of three children. She spent her childhood in Reitnau and then later worked as a seller in a store in Zurich. As she worked there, she moved in with her sister, who lived in Uster.
Alice Hunziker met her future husband, Jakob Schaufelberger, at her workplace. Before the Second World War started, they got married in Zurich. The couple had no children.
Schaufelberger enjoyed reading the newspaper, reading the Bible, listening to music, and watching TV. Since the death of 109-year-old Evelyne Garnier-Dubois on 1 May 2019, Schaufelberger was the last known Swiss person born before 1910.
Her sister Pauline Herrmann-Hunziker lived to the age of 107 years, 289 days (5 May 1903 – 18 February 2011).
Schaufelberger-Hunziker died in Zurich, Canton of Zurich, Switzerland on 16 November 2020 at the age of 112 years, 310 days. She is the oldest Swiss-born person ever.
