Anisio Rodrigues Alves [Portuguese: Anísio] (30 December 1892 – 16 August 2009) was a Brazilian supercentenarian whose age is currently pending validation by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). If fully validated, he would be the oldest documented man of all time (being older than Jiroemon Kimura), the first man who reached the age of 116, as well as the third-oldest documented Brazilian person ever (after Francisca Celsa dos Santos and Julia Maria Francisca Simao), and the world's oldest living person following the death of Emma Tillman on 28 January 2007, until his own death over 2 and a half years later.
Biography[]
Anisio Rodrigues Alves was born in Riachao do Jacuipe, Bahia, Brazil on 30 December 1892. One of his younger brothers, Jose Rodrigues, was a professor of music and bandleader of Sociedade Filarmonica Euterpe Jacuipense.
He was member of orchestra, Sociedade Filarmonica Lyra. He was known by many as "Mestre (Maestro) Anisio" due to his skills as a musician.
On 16 November 1916, he married a woman named Jesuina, and had 13 children with her. He worked as a stonemason, but also made a living playing double bass. After his first wife died, he married for the second time, to a woman named Francisca; the union produced 6 children.
He was a fan of football (soccer), and especially admired Brazilian footballer Edson Arantes do Nascimento, otherwise known as Pelé.
On 9 September 2008, he may have surpassed the final age of Christian Mortensen, becoming the oldest documented man ever (however, that title is held by verified Jiroemon Kimura).
On 30 December 2008, he may have become the first known man in history to have reached the age of 116 and could remain one of only two men to do so (the other being Kimura).
In his later years, he lived with his daughter from his second marriage, Anísia Ferreira Rodrigues, who was aged 65 in 2009. He had poor health because of diabetes and heart problems.
Rodrigues Alves died of prostate cancer on 16 August 2009 at the age of 116 years, 229 days.
On 18 July 2023, the Gerontology Research Group announced on the World Supercentenarian Forum that Rodrigues Alves had been given the pending status.
