Biography[]

Ferris was born Anna Henrietta Cappellini in Lower Manhattan, New York, United States, on 11 February 1900 to Italian immigrants Davide Cappellini and Caterina (née Torre) Cappellini. She was just four years old when she lost her mother, and her father died when she was 11. Her brother worked to support his siblings while Anna's older sister raised the family. Her youngest sister Beatrice Cappellini (1902–1919), died from Spanish Flu at the age of 16.

Following World War I, she met her husband, Richard Ferruggiari (they later legally shortened their surname to Ferris), and the couple was married on 24 October 1923, at St. Joachim's Church in New York City. They moved to Brooklyn, New York, and on 8 July 1924, Ferris gave birth to a daughter, Beatrice Dorothy, in their home. In 1928, the family moved to Teaneck, New Jersey, where Ferris lived until 1989. She drove her car until she was in her mid-80s.

In 1989, Ferris’ family convinced her that it would be best for her to live with her daughter. She did so until her daughter's death at 80 years old on 5 January 2005, when she moved to her grandson's home in Washingtonville, New York. In 2009, she was hospitalized briefly and recuperated at Elant Nursing Home in Goshen, New York, where she lived for the rest of her life. In her later years, she enjoyed watching the television, watching movies, reading, and spending time with her family. Until she began having memory issues at the age of 107, she loved to tell stories about her childhood.

Ferris died in New York City, New York, United States, on 7 May 2011 at the age of 111 years, 85 days. She was survived by four grandchildren and multiple great and great-great grandchildren.
