Dr. Anna Julia "Annie" Cooper Haywood (10 August 1858 - 27 February 1964) was an American centenarian, author and educator who was possibly one of the last surviving people to have been born into slavery in the United States.
Biography[]
Anna Julia Cooper was born into slavery in Raleigh, North Carolina on 10 August 1858. Anna's biological parents were Hannah Stanley (1817-1899) and George Washington Haywood (1802-1890), her adopted father was Fabius Julius Haywood Sr (1803-1880), Hannah's second husband, who was white. On June 1, 1877, Anna married the love of her life, George A.C. Cooper (1844-1879), who sadly died 2 years later. Anna later became an author, a doctor and a teacher and moved to Washington, DC, USA.
Anna Julia Cooper died in Washington, DC, USA on 27 February 1964 at the age of 105 years, 201 days. At the time of her death, she may have been one of the last surviving people who was born into slavery in the United States.
