Biography
Anne Samson was born in Richmond, Nova Scotia, Canada on 27 February 1891 to parents Thomas and Philomene (née Bourque) Samson. She had nine siblings, four of whom were brothers and five were sisters. After she finished school, she became a teacher in 1912, teaching at a school in Truro, Nova Scotia.
In 1917, she took her final vows as a member of the Filles de Jesus. After taking them, she returned to Nova Scotia and continued teaching for another 30 years, retiring in 1947. Her father Thomas died in 1927 at the age of 84. Samson then moved to Quebec and stayed there for 10 years. While she was there, her mother Philomene died aged 96. She then returned to the Maritime Provinces to do part-time jobs until 1976, when she moved into the Motherhouse of the Order in New Brunswick.
In her later years, she enjoyed writing poetry and songs. Samson broke her hip aged 95, which rendered her unable to walk, but she was writing and composing well beyond her 100th birthday. For her last few years, she was bedridden, but was said to still love chocolate, even though she had no teeth.
She became the oldest known living person in Canada, following the death of 111-year-old Evangeline Saulnier on 19 March 2002.
Samson died in Moncton, Westmorland, New Brunswick, Canada on 29 November 2004 at the age of 113 years, 276 days. She was survived by a number of nephews and nieces.
