Annie Vivian Matthews (née Alcorn; 26 September 1909 – 12 December 2019) was an American supercentenarian whose age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) in 2023.
Biography[]
Annie Matthews was born Annie Vivian Alcorn in Olney, Montgomery County, Maryland, United States, on 26 September 1909 to Tobias and Hester (née Ray) Alcorn. She began her life on a plantation in Brookville in Montgomery County. She and her brothers would walk 5 miles to the two-room school for African-Americans, while passing an "all-white" school on the way. She has outlived three of her four children. Her mother died at the age of 108.
In September 2019, she celebrated her 110th birthday. At that time, she had more than 45 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Matthews died in Laurel, Prince George's County, Maryland, USA, on 12 December 2019 at the age of 110 years, 77 days.
