Biography
Early Life
Turnbull was born on 21 September 1898 in Haywood, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Her family moved to Stoneyburn, Linlithgowshire (now West Lothian) when she was about four years old.
After leaving school as a teenager, Turnbull moved to Edinburgh where she worked as a housemaid, a job she held for most of her life. She worked in private residences, where she met writer Rudyard Kipling and actor Gordon Jackson. She had two daughters.
Later Life
Turnbull retired at the age of 76. She lived without hot water until she was 92. She moved into a care home in Leith, Edinburgh, shortly before her 110th birthday in 2008. She credited her longevity to "hard work" and a "daily glass of sherry".
Turnbull died on 3 September 2010 at the age of 111 years, 347 days. At the time of her death, she had four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Longevity Records
On 19 September 2008, two days before turning 110, Turnbull became the oldest living person in Scotland following the death of 110 year-old Alexina Calvert. She later became the oldest living person in the United Kingdom following the death of 111 year-old Eunice Bowman on 16 July 2010. She was also the last-surviving British person born in 1898.
Following Turnbull's death on 3 September 2010, Elsie Steele of England became the UK's oldest living person, while Marion Richardson became Scotland's oldest living person.
