Biography[]

Early Life[]

Annie Woods Juarez claimed to have been born on 16 August 1912 in Many, Louisiana, USA. She was the ninth out of eleven children born to Henry and Cassie Porter Woods, and she is also their last surviving child. She grew up in West Tulsa, Oklahoma, before moving to Chowchilla, California, for elementary school. She went to high school in Merced, California, and continued her studies at a community college in Los Angeles, California, where she has lived ever since.

Later Life[]

Juarez was a caregiver, domestic worker, and food service provider before working for Rockwell-Boeing Aircraft Corporation as an equipment procurement specialist, a position she held for 38 years. In 1938, she met Cruz Juarez, to whom she was married for 45 years until his death in 1983. The two were passionate about their faith and became charter members of the Christ Temple Church of Holiness in Los Angeles, California. Juarez was an usher for the church for over 45 years and still belongs to the ministry.

Though Juarez never had any children of her own, she was a maternal figure to her nieces, nephews, neighbors, and other relatives. Juarez loved to cook; she was particularly known for her collard greens, candied yams, enchiladas, and cornbread stuffing. Sometimes she would harvest food from her own garden, such as tomatoes, zucchini, avocados, and corn.

Juarez is a supporter of The Hazelle Catherine Bass Institute for the Arts in Pasadena, California, a non-profit organization whose priority is teaching students how to read, sing, and play musical instruments. She also has a scholarship named after her, the Annie Lillie Woods Juarez Scholarship, which aims to assist underserved youth in music education programs.

Juarez attributes faith to her longevity: "Honor Him always and He will sustain you in peace, abundance and grace."

In August 2022, she celebrated her claimed 110th birthday.

Annie Woods Juarez was last reported to be alive on 25 August 2022 when she lived in Los Angeles, California, USA, at the claimed age of 110 years, 9 days. However according to a court record from September 13th 2023 her guardianship/conservatorship was renewed. This would seem to indicate she was still living in 2023 at least and may still be alive.

Age Issues[]

Annie Woods Juarez's 1920 census suggests that she was born in 1915, potentially making her three years younger than claimed.[1]
