Ante Toni Beritic [Croatian: Beritić] (14 January 1895 – 27 July 2002) was a Croatian centenarian who was considered to be the oldest man who died in Croatia, until his age was surpassed by Josip Krsul on 23 June 2019.

Biography[]

Beritic was born in the village of Vrboska, Kingdom of Dalmatia, Austria-Hungary (present-day Split-Dalmatia County, Croatia) on 14 January 1895. He was born in a poor family. At the age of 18, he moved to the United States where he lived for 10 years. Firstly, he moved to Alaska and worked as a fisherman. In 1923, he moved back to his birthplace.

For some time, he worked in the hospitality industry in Vrboska and as a teacher of English in the primary school of Vrbanj. The knowledge of the English language enabled him to work as translator for US General during World War II. After that, he worked in a school in Split. He organized numerous courses and retired in 1950.

His wife, Vinka, died in 1997 at the age of 88. At the time of his death, his granddaughter owned the caffe bar called "Nono Toni" in the village of Vrboska, which is named after Toni.

Beritic died in the village of Vrboska, Split-Dalmatia County, Croatia on 27 July 2002 at the age of 107 years, 194 days.
