Antonia Torregroza de Effio (11 February 1913 – 28 February 2024) was a Panamanian supercentenarian who was one of the oldest known survivors of COVID-19, having recovered from the disease at the age of 107. She was also the grandmother of Dr. Julio Effio. Her age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).

Biography

Antonia Torregroza de Effio was born in Panama on 11 February 1913.

In 2017, she had surgery for the placement of a pacemaker. In January 2019, she met Pope Francis. In August 2020, she was hospitalized after falling and breaking her hip.

Between 2020 and 2021, at the age of 107, she contracted COVID-19 during the coronavirus pandemic. However, she had successfully recovered by the time of her 108th birthday on 11 February 2021, making her one of the oldest known survivors of the disease.

In February 2023, she celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian.

Torregroza de Effio died in Panama City, Panama Province, Panama on 28 February 2024 at the age of 111 years, 17 days. At the time of her death, she was the oldest known living person in Panama Province, and the second-oldest known living person in Panama, behind Dolores Maria Vazquez.
