Biography[]

Armida Sholar was born in Sumter, South Carolina, USA on 9 August 1905. Her parents were Josiah and Armida Moses Brunson. In the early 1920s, after Sholar had fallen in love and ran away to get married, she was arrested when her father called the police to retrieve her. However, she was soon able to marry Henry Wiley Sholar, doing so on 20 March 1922. The couple had four children: Martha Jenkins, Henry Wiley, Bill, and Mike Sholar. Her husband died from a heart attack in 1949 at the age of 47.

In the early 20th century, Sholar was arrested again after refusing to wear stockings at the beach (women were not permitted to go without stockings in public). She worked as a desk clerk at Wesley Long Hospital. Around 1978, she moved into a retirement home in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Sholar beat cancer twice and smoked frequently until she broke her hip at the age of 103. When she was caught with cigarettes at her retirement home, they were taken away, so she started smoking outside. Ultimately, Sholar quit smoking at the age of 108 — but only because her retirement home banned smoking outright on the home's grounds. Sholar was independent-minded and had multiple falls a year as she refused to ask for help with going to the bathroom. She began using a wheelchair after a particularly bad fall.

At the time of her 109th birthday in 2014, Sholar was reported as having a sharp mind, despite having hearing and sight issues. Sholar celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian in August 2015. She attributed her longevity to not worrying about anything.

Following the death of Ruby Clodfelter on 19 November 2016, Sholar became the oldest known living resident of North Carolina.

Armida Sholar died in Greensboro, North Carolina, USA on 4 April 2017 following a brief illness at the age of 111 years, 238 days. At the time of Sholar's death, her son Bill was alive, as well as 12 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
