Arthur Nash (7 January 1885 – 4 November 1996) was a British-Canadian supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).
Early life[]
Arthur Nash was born near Birmingham, Worcestershire, United Kingdom on 7 January 1885. His parents were Alfred, an ivory turner, and Laura Nash. The couple had seven children in total, of whom Arthur was the youngest. He had 5 brothers and one sister. His mother Laura died in 1890, when Arthur was just 5 years old.
In 1901, the family emigrated by ship and train to the small town Cowan in the Canadian province Manitoba. He held various jobs including working as a cook for a telegraph company, setting up his own sawmill business with one of his brothers, and later on as a farmer on the homestead the Nash family had purchased upon arrival.
Nash married Theresa Kennedy on 9 September 1918. The couple had five sons and two daughters in total.
Later life[]
Throughout most of his centenarian years, Nash was still physically active and was able to do various chores and walk around with no difficulties. He moved in with one of his sons when he was 105 years old. Around 1993, an illness forced him to enter a nursing home.
Nash died in Swan River, Manitoba, Canada on 4 November 1996 at the age of 111 years, 302 days.
Longevity records[]
He may be the oldest man to ever die in Canada, breaking a record that George Ives set in 1993. He may also have been the oldest British-born man after Jesse Yewdall's death on 23 July 1993 until his own death. After the death of Emile Fourcade of France, he may also have been the second-oldest European-born man after Christian Mortensen of the United States.
