Longevity claimant

Arthur Reed (8 June 1860? – 15 April 1984) was an American longevity claimant to the world's oldest man and person title whose age is currently unvalidated by the Guinness World Records (GWR).

Biography[]

Arthur Reed claimed to have been born in Buffalo, New York, USA on 8 June 1860. Reed traveled in the South with his mother, who cooked for Union troops during the Civil War. He ran away from home at the age of nine and began the first of several jobs he claims kept him fit over the years. At the age of 9 he started a life of hard work. Throughout his life he was a carpenter, truck driver, railroad worker, sawmill worker, and oil well worker. At 98 he was farming 10 acres of cotton in Fresno, Calif. At 111 he was riding his bicycle. Until 116 he worked part-time as a watchman at the Phoenix Iron Works in Oakland, where in earlier days he heaved 100-pound sacks of ore off boxcars.

Reed was married three times but had no children. At age 123 he expressed his wish of having a young wife, "between 18 and 35" he said. He expressed being upset that his claim was not accepted by GWR. At age 123 he was going to be on a TV show.

Arthur Reed died in Buffalo, New York, USA on 15 April 1984 at the claimed age of 123 years, 292 days. If his claimed age is true then he would be the oldest man as well as person ever. Reed's age was verified by the Social Security Administration, which began paying him benefits in 1944, just seven years after the agency was established.
