Avice Nelson Clarke (formely Ramos; 17 May 1900 – 17 January 2012) was a British-American supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). At time of her death, she was the second-oldest known person in California (after Soledad Mexia).

Biography[]

Avice Clarke was born in Nelson, Lancashire, England, UK on 17 May 1900. She was educated to grade 6 and then went to work in the cotton mills at age 12.

In 1920, her family moved from England to Gilroy, California, where they worked in the local cannery. It was at the cannery that she met and later married George Edison Ramos in 1920. The couple had two children: Norman Ramos (1922–2016) and George Ramos Jr., died in 1924 of diphtheria. They were married for 28 years and divorced in 1948. He died in 1970. After the divorce, she reverted to her maiden name.

During World War II, she worked at the Oakland Naval Supply Depot as an expediter. After the war she went back to England and worked in the same mill she had when she was 12. Later she returned to California.

She moved to Goldendale from England in 1982 to be near her sister Edith Washburn. She moved to Camins, California in 1991 to be with her son who was a recent widower.

Every year since Avice was 100 years old she had received a birthday card from Queen Elizabeth II of England. She has also had cards from California governors and the President of the USA.

She was a member of the Bay District Lancashire Society, which was a social club for those hailing from Lancashire and was an avid knitter and gardener.

She came from a family of long living relatives: one of her siblings lived to age 99, another to 89, and her mother to almost 102.

Avice Clarke died in Placerville, California, USA on 17 January 2012 at the age of 111 years, 245 days. She was survived by her 89-year-old son Norman Ramos; three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
