Benilda Esther Ospino Altamar (28 December 1897 – 28 December 2010) was a Colombian supercentenarian whose age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) in 2022.
Biography[]
Benilda Ospino Altamar was born on 28 December 1897 (claimed 1894) in a farm which was located in what was then an impenetrable virgin jungle, known as "The Totumo", located in the municipality of Nueva Granada, Magdalena, Colombia. She was daughter of Felipe Ospino Moscote, who was a musician of ancient vallenato (and one of the founders of the municipality of Nueva Granada) and María Altamar Barrios. They were both single at the time. At the age of 15, she went living with her first partner, Juvenal Diaz, with whom she had her first son, Buenaventura Diaz. Buenaventura was the composer of a well known song in Colombia, called ''El grito del vagabundo'' (later sang by musician Guillermo Buitrago). Later, with Juan Ospino, she had two other children: Juan Ospino, also a musician, and María del Rosario Ospino Ospino. Later, with accordeon player Juan Evangelista Tapias Baena, she had six other children: musicians Juan Evangelista and Nicolás Antonio, Concepción Eloísa, Félix and Plácido. With her last partner, Concepción Romero, with whom she would spend the rest of her life, she had one child: Juan de Dios Romero Ospino. Benilda was the grandmother of Beto Rada Ospino (1943–2019), who was dominated as king of the Vallenato in 1993. Her daughter, María del Rosario, was still alive at age 103 in 2021.
Benilda Ospino Altamar died in countryside of El Dificil, Magdalena, Colombia on 28 December 2010 at the age of 113 years, 0 days (claimed 116 years, 0 days).
