Bernabe "Berna" Serrano Chavez [Spanish: Bernabé "Berna" Serrano Chávez] (born 11 June 1915) is a Salvadoran supercentenarian who is currently the oldest known living person in El Salvador. Her age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) and LongeviQuest (LQ).

Biography[]

Bernabe Serrano Chavez was born in San Agustin, Usulutan, El Salvador, on 11 June 1915 (claims 6 September 1914) to parents Eleuterio Serrano and Francisca Chavez. As of May 2024, her eldest daughter's age was 90, while her youngest daughter was 70. Her brother, Florencio, was reported to be 101 at the time. He holds deep gratitude to her as she took care of him when their mother died.

She married Hipolito Ruiz on 24 March 1934 and had children together. Chavez was widowed in 1997, after that she never remarried.

According to her daughter, despite her advanced age, she is lucid and active as she still recognizes her children, nephews, and grandchildren. Moreover she doesn't take any medication. Her diet consists of tortillas, well-done beef loin, country-styled chicken, yogurt and other juices she enjoys. She attributed her longevity to eating beans and herbs.

On 4 November 2024, following the death of 111-year-old Josefa Rodriguez Chanta, she became the oldest known living person in El Salvador.

Bernabe Serrano Chavez currently lives in Zaragoza, La Libertad, El Salvador, at the age of 110 years, 243 days (claims 111 years, 156 days).
