Bessie Higgins (née Brown; 23 December 1902 – 7 July 2013) was an American supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).
Biography[]
Bessie Higgins was born in Concord Township, Pennsylvania, USA on 23 December 1902. Her parents were David Alonzo Brown and Amanda (née Stillwagon) Brown. She had six siblings.
She married Frank Higgins in c.1933. The couple had three children: Suzanne Burns (died April 1999), Marilyn Davis (born 1936) and Rodney Higgins (born 1939). Frank died on 6 January 1985.
She was a graduate of Concord Township High School, Butler Business School, where she also taught, and received her bachelor's degree from Slippery Rock University. She taught numerous places from a one-room school in Concord Township to Zelienople Children's Home. She retired from the Butler School District as a special-education teacher.
She was a member of the First English Lutheran Church for more than 60 years. She also was a member of Unionville Grange and Butler Women's club.
Bessie Higgins died in Cabot, Pennsylvania, USA on 7 July 2013 at the age of 110 years, 196 days. She is survived by one daughter Marilyn Davis, one son Rodney Higgins, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
