Bessie Alice Riehl (née Bateman; 30 August 1911 – 26 March 2022) was a Canadian supercentenarian whose age has been validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). At the time of her death, she was the second-oldest known living person in Manitoba, behind Jemima Westcott.
Biography[]
Bessie Riehl was born in Durban, Manitoba, Canada on 30 August 1911. She was raised on a farm, and as a child she did farm work such as driving a four horse hitch on any of the many farm implements such as a "bucking pole" used for stacking hay. She married Clayton Riehl on 26 October 1933, and they farmed until 1945 when they moved to Durban.
For the last 15 years of her life, Riehl lived in a care home in Swan River, Manitoba, Canada. She died there on 26 March 2022 at the age of 110 years, 208 days. At the time of her death, she had 13 grandchildren, over 20 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
