Bozana Mandalinic [Montenegrin: Božana Mandalinić, Montenegrin Cyrillic: Божана Мандалинић] (14 January 1912 – 11 May 2020) was a Montenegrin centenarian who was the oldest known living person in Montenegro at the time of her death.
Biography[]
Božana Mandalinić was born in the village of Škuletić, Nikšić Municipality, Kingdom of Montenegro (now Montenegro), on 14 January 1912. At some point, she married Vuk Mandalinić (1914–1981), and had four daughters, and two sons.
Until World War II, her family lived off livestock and agriculture. Then came the war and many went into the woods to seek freedom. One of her brothers ended up in a German camp and the other in an Italian camp. Parents, middle brother and sister went to the forest, and the Italians set fire to their house and barn and destroyed everything they could. Her brother and mother were wounded in the war, her father and sister, who was 12 years old, died in Sutjeska. Her husband was in prison twice. She was saved by a brother-in-law by hiding with him and staying alive. She had a hard time surviving the war, she was one of those who were taken to Vojvodina (present-day Serbia) by the communist colonization after the war. She left with her brother, daughter-in-law and two children, and her husband joined her after he sold the cattle. Although they had everything they needed in Vojvodina, they missed the closest and rugged Montenegro. She buried one her daughter in Vojvodina, but also gave birth to a son. It was nice there, but it was hard for her and she kept asking them to return to Montenegro. Then they came to Nikšić. At first, they lived as tenants, and then slowly made their own house out of someone else's house. Her husband worked at the Ironworks, where he retired, and she received a veteran's pension, because during the war she worked for the partisans, for her own, for her family, (although she did not take part in the fighting). Her husband died in 1981, at the age of 67. Later, she was awarded one of the highest awards for war veterans of the former Yugoslavia, the Commemorative Medal of the Partisans of 1941.
On 14 January 2012, she celebrated her 100th birthday, becoming a centenarian. In her centenarian years, she was happy to watch Turkish series, and she especially loved watching Novak Đoković matches.
On 4 May 2018, following the death of 108-year-old Vasiljka Šćepanović, she became the oldest known living woman in Montenegro.
On 6 December 2018, following the death of 109-year-old Božo Čolović, she became the oldest known living person in Montenegro.
Božana Mandalinić died in Nikšić, Nikšić Municipality, Montenegro, on 11 May 2020, at the age of 108 years, 118 days. Following her death, then 105-year-old Petar Grujić became the oldest known living person in Montenegro, and then 103-year-old Mileva Tomović became the oldest known living woman in Montenegro.
