Burnie Coullette Baxter Montgomery (née Coulette; 15 April 1906? – 27 August 2016), known as "Berney" by the media, was an American supercentenarian whose age is currently unvalidated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).
Biography[]
Burnie Montgomery claimed to have been born in Summerton, South Carolina, USA on 15 April 1906. Her parents were Steward Coulette and Bertha (née Durant) Coulette. She was the second-oldest of nine siblings.
She was educated in the public schools of South Carolina. Burnie was a farmer and homemaker until she migrated to Washington, D.C. in 1955. She married Jack Baxter on 19 December 1929 and had eight children. She widowed on 30 March 1943. In 1948, Burnie married John Montgomery. The couple had one child.
She performed housekeeping work at several hotels in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area until she was compelled to quit work to care for her ailing husband and aging father. She was a talented quilt-maker and enjoyed cooking and traveling.
Montgomery died in Columbia, South Carolina, USA on 27 August 2016 at the claimed age of 110 years, 134 days. She was survived by two sons, two daughters, one sister Mariah Harris and one brother Loucious Coulette, 21 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, 50 great-great grandchildren, many nephews and nieces.
