Carmela Velardi-Merrina (22 October 1906 – 21 April 2019) was an Italian supercentenarian whose age has been validated by the Gerontology Research Group.

Biography

Carmela Velardi was born in Palermo, Sicily, Italy on 22 October 1906. She lived in the district of San Giovanni, in Milazzo, Sicily, with one of her six children, Gloria, and the family of her granddaughter, Gioia, who owns a toy store. At the age of 110, Velardi was still lucid though with some understandable ailment. She was a housewife, even though relatives remember that she had a short appearance in the film "Vacanze d'amore", in 1955. In this film she portrayed the mother of the actress Delia Scala.

Mrs Carmela Velardi celebrated her 111 years on 22 October 2017, surrounded by her daughters and dozens of grandchildren and great-grandchildren and has also received the visit of Mayor and a councillor.

She was the second-oldest person in Sicily, behind the 113-year old Diega Cammalleri.

Carmela Velardi died on 21 April 2019 at the age of 112 years, 181 days.
