Carmelina Augusta Delgado (8 November 1900 – 19 May 2013) was a Portuguese supercentenarian who was the the oldest living person in Portugal at the time of death.
Biography[]
Carmelina Augusta Delgado was born in the parish of Cabeça de Igreja (later annexed to the parish of Tuizelo), Municipality of Vinhais, Bragança, Portugal on 8 November 1900. At the age of 10, she left Bragança and moved to Vinhais to live with her godmother, “Dona Inacinha”.
At the age of 23, she left her godmother’s house to get married. She married to Manuel António Gonçalves, a policeman, and she always accompanied her husband wherever he was deployed. They lived in Mogadouro, Bragança, Guadramil, Varze and Vimioso, where she settled at the age of 40, with some regret at not having returned permanently to her hometown. She worked in agriculture, digging, planting onions, beans, potatoes, cutting leaves to give to pigs, and much more. She had two daughters and never wanted them to go to work in agriculture, as the eldest daughter went to learn to work as a seamstress and the youngest went to study for school.
At the age of 106 she was still quite lucid. She remembered the Implantation of the Republic in Portugal, which took place at the end of 1910, and seeing supporters of the monarchy hiding in wells so as not to be arrested. Delgado still remembered the day the first car appeared in Bragança, and the children running after it to see what it was. At the time, she loved to go for car rides with her granddaughter and enjoyed watching TV, especially soccer since she was a fan of FC Porto. On her 112th birthday, she was lucid and still able to walk, sometimes with the aid of the walker and sometimes without. At that time, she was living with her granddaughter, Fátima Roxo.
In November 2010, she celebrated her 110th birthday, becoming the first known supercentenarian in Bragança District. To this day, she holds the title of the oldest person to ever live and die in this district.
On 26 September 2011, following the death of 113-year-old Maria Luiza Nunes da Silva, she became the oldest living person in Portugal.
Carmelina Augusta Delgado died in Vimioso, Bragança, Portugal on 19 May 2013 at the age of 112 years, 192 days.
