Biography
Catena Cavallaro was born in Catania, Sicily, Italy, on 8 October 1907. Her parents were Ignazio and Rose (née Emmi) Pagano. She was one of twelve siblings. She met her husband, Carmello Cavallaro, while living in Italy and emigrated to the USA in the 1930s. She and Carmello lived in Pleasantville, New York, until he died in 1961.
After her husband's death, Cavallaro didn't remarry and began living with her eldest son, Ignazio, and his family in Chappaqua, New York.
Cavallaro has jokingly told North Salem News that the secret to her longevity is “a boyfriend,” but her family credits it to a lifetime of made-from-scratch meals using fresh ingredients from her garden.
Cavallaro died in Briarcliff Manor, New York on 13 October 2018 at the age of 111 years, 5 days.
