Catherine J. Abate (15 November 1909 – 7 May 2022) was an Italian-born American supercentenarian who, at the time of her death, was the oldest person living in New York. She was also the second-oldest known living Italian-born person, behind Delio Venturotti of Brazil, as well as the oldest known living Italian-born woman. Her age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) on 8 March 2021.

Biography[]

Abate was born as Caterina Labate in Stigliano, Basilicata, Italy on 15 November 1909. Her parents were Joseph and Mary (DiSanto) Abate. She had seven siblings: Rocco Abate (1902–1969), James Abate (1905–1979), Mary Louise Abate (1917–2005), Lucy Abate (1919–1986), Rosemarie Abate (1922–2016), Angeline Hillman (born 1924), and Lola Marie Balon (1927–2020). In 1919, she moved to Buffalo, New York. She never married and had no children.

Her only surviving sibling, younger sister Angeline Hillman, is still alive as of 2021 at the age of 97.

She became the oldest known living Italian-born woman, following the death of Ida Zoccarato on 16 January 2022.

In her later life, Abate lived in an assisting living home in Hamburg, New York, USA. She died on 7 May 2022 at the age of 112 years, 173 days. Coincidentally, her death occurred on the same day as the death of Angela Tiraboschi, the oldest known living person in Italy.
