Choi Ae-gi [Korean: 최애기] (18 February 1895 – 25 January 2005) was a South Korean centenarian who was believed to be the oldest living woman in South Korea at the time of her death.

Early Life[]

Choi Ae-gi was born in Hwasun, South Jeolla, South Korea on 18 February 1895. Although her ID card said she was born on 10 May 1895, the professor Park Sang-cheol [Korean: 박상철], of the College of Medicine of Seoul National University, established her birth date was 18 February 1895.

Choi is a descendant of the Haeju Choe clan. Her original name was Cha-hyun [Korean: 차현], but she changed it at age 14 during a census. When she was young, her aunt, who was alphabetized, learnt her hangeul. She trained by writing The Tale of Shim Chong.

At the age of 18, Choi married in Pungsan-ri, Dado-myeon, Naju, South Jeolla. She had four children (three sons and one daughter). As of 1999, they gave her 17 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Choi was a farmer during her whole life, and when she wasn't working, she walked around the town as a doctor.

Later Life[]

Choi left Naju in 1994. Since 1997, she lived in Seoul with her son Hong Dok-woo [Korean: 홍독우] (aged 87 in 2004), her grandson and her great-grandson. Her family said she ate three meals daily and exercised regularly so she was never overweight, nor had she ever experienced a serious illness.

In 2003, Choi began to have a slight dementia. In September 2004, she was said to be the oldest living person in South Korea. At the time, she reportedly weighted 32 kg, and was almost blind and deaf.

Choi Ae-gi died in Cheongun-dong, Jongno District, Seoul, South Korea, on 25 January 2005, at the age of 109 years, 342 days. At the time of her death, she was believed to be the oldest living woman in South Korea. Following her death, then 109-year-old Um Ok-gun was reported to be the oldest living person in South Korea.
