Christian Tobias Jakob Berthelsen (7 October 1916 – 23 April 2015) was a Greenland-born Danish school principal and author.

Biography[]

Christian Berthelsen was born in Nuuk, Greenland on 7 October 1916. He trained teacher at the seminars in Nuuk and in Jonstrup with a supplementary education from the Danish Teachers College in 1945. He had a long career in the school system as a teacher, consultant, school inspector and in the years from 1960 to 72 school principal. At the same time, he held a number of positions as a member of the radio board and a member of the board of the Knud Rasmussen University College. He was also chairman of the Greenlandic Publishing House for a number of years, as was the chairman of the Greenlandic Language and Writing Committee and the Place Names Committee. Committed community debater he was also strongly involved in society - especially in the debate about school and the education system in Greenland.

Next to that he ran an extensive business as a writer and writer. He has published commemorative books, published a Greenlandic social science as well as a highly acclaimed anthology on Greenlandic Literature, published in 1983, published in both Greenlandic, Danish and English. Christian Berthelsen received several honors over the years, among others. The Greenlandic Company's Rink Medal The Greenlandic Home Rule's Meritorious Medal "Nersornaat" in silver 1990 and "Nersornaat" in gold 2002 and in 2009 received the Greenlandic Writers' Association Honorary Award. In 2014 Christian Berthelsen was named honorary doctor of the University of Greenland - Ilisimatusarfik.

Christian Berthelsen died in Hørsholm, Denmark on 23 April 2015 at the age of 98 years and 198 days. He was oldest known man born in Greenland until Anton Geisler passed his age on 8 September 2017.
