Clara Augusta Byrne(s) (née Hodge; 28 February 1861 – 11 April 1970) was a British-born Australian centenarian.

Biography[]

Clara Byrne was born in Pimlico, London, United Kingdom on 28 February 1861. Her parents were George Henry Hodge and Elizabeth (née Glasspool) Hodge.

She emigrated to Australia with her Irish husband Peter Byrne in October 1884, and settled in Leichhardt where they married in 1887. Her husband died at the age of 92. Byrne became oldest living woman in Australia after death of Jessie Pearce on 18 June 1967.

Byrne died in Chesalon Nursing Home, Summer Hill, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on 11 April 1970 at the age of 109 years, 42 days. At the time of her death, she had eight children, and more than 59 descendants. That time she was believed to be second-oldest Australian ever, behind James Hull. After her death, Ada Sharp became oldest living woman in Australia.
