Clarabell Demers (née Campbell; 3 November 1910 – 17 January 2024), known as "Grandma D", was an American supercentenarian who was the oldest known living person in the U.S. state of North Dakota at the time of her death. Her age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).

Biography[]

Clarabell Demers was born in Acton, North Dakota, USA, on 3 November 1910, the oldest of three children born to Victor and Philomina (née Collette) Campbell. She had a younger brother, Harold (deceased 1981), and a younger sister, Odell (deceased 1975).

Demers grew up in the village of Oakwood, which is just east of Grafton. She was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church there before going on to St. John's in Grafton.

She married her husband, Frederick Demers, in February 1930 and had three children with him: Mary Jane (deceased 2018), Donald, and Ronald (deceased 2015). Frederick died in 1979.

With her late husband, Demers helped run the JR's bar in Oakwood. It has been known for its taco night on Wednesdays. The bar is operated by her son Donald and grandsons Guy and Gene.

At the age of 112, Demers was still able to walk with the help of a walker.

Clarabell Demers died on 17 January 2024 in Grafton, North Dakota, USA, at the age of 113 years, 75 days.

Recognition[]

Following the death of 115-year-old Iris Westman on 3 January 2021, Demers became the oldest known living person in North Dakota.

Her age was verified by Waclaw Jan Kroczek and Marilyn Hagerty, and validated by the GRG on 20 March 2023.
