Biography[]
Early Life[]
Clemence Rioual was born as Clemence Nicolas in Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honore [French: Faubourg-Saint-Honoré], Paris, Ile-de-France, France on 28 February 1911, from two parents from Rosporden and Melgven, in Finistere department. Having lost her parents at age 5, she was raised by her grandmother in Melgven, Finistere, Brittany, France, and worked in the fields.
Rioual married a man with the surname Rioual; they had one daughter, Michele [French: Michèle], and the couple liked to make boat trips. Rioual made a lot of professions. She spend a part of her life in Paris before coming back to Concarneau in 1985.
Later Life[]
Rioual's brother-in-law, Jos Rioual (1909–2011) lived to 101. At the age of 105, she lived alone in her own flat, and receives a domestic helper once a week. She walked with a cane (but only to prevent her from falling), could do swing, and often received the visit of her daughter with her dog Iggy Pop. Sometimes, she drinks a glass of bordeaux with some sugar cane, but she said journalists while laughing: "My secret? I haven't any secret."
On her 107th birthday in 2018, Rioual had three grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren (three of them being Youna (aged 7 in 2018), Anaelle [French: Anaëlle] (aged 14 in 2018), and Malcolm (aged 12 in 2018)). She was reported to like watching the serie Sœur Thérèse.com, and said: "My little trick for staying in good shape, other than my family's love: I drink a little glass of porto each day, with water and sugar cane."
At the age of 107, she moved to her daughter's Michele house. On her 108th birthday in 2019, Rioual was reported to be "indifferent" about her age. Because of the first lockdown in France, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she celebrated her 109th birthday in "head-to-head" with her daughter Michele.
Some weeks before her 110th birthday in 2021, Rioual moved to Cornouaille's readaptation pole, in Saint-Yvi, Finistere, Brittany, France, where she celebrated her 110th birthday. She was reported to have a good appetite, and some weeks after, she would come back to her daughter's house in Concarneau.
Following the death of 111-year-old Anne-Marie Papail on 11 April 2021, Rioual became the oldest living person in Brittany.
Rioual died in Concarneau, Finistere, Brittany, France, on 27 March 2022 at the age of 110 years, 361 days. She was buried on 31 March 2022, the day of her 111th birthday. At the time of her death, she was the oldest living person in Finistere department and Brittany.
