Constantin I. Nastase [Romanian: Constantin I. Năstase] (3 June 1915 – 30 October 2023) was a Romanian centenarian who was the oldest living major general in Romania and the the second-oldest known living man (and veteran) in Romania and the Balkans (behind Ilie Ciocan) at the time of his death.

Biography[]

Constantin Nastase was born in Milveni, Arges, Romania on 3 June 1915.

He graduated from the "Carol I" Normal School in Campulung Muscel. In 1938, Nastase received his teacher's diploma in Pitesti.

He fought in the Second World War, on the Eastern Front, from June 1941 to 1944. As a reserve officer of the Romanian Army, he participated in the 19th Caracal Infantry Regiment in the Battle of Odesa (1941) and at the Battle of Stalingrad (1942–43). He escaped with his life from Stalingrad and marched thousands of kilometers through the Russian steppe, at temperatures of -40° C. After 75 days of marching, he arrived in Romania where he was urgently admitted to the Military Hospital in Craiova.

After graduating from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the University of Bucharest, he became a professor of mathematics and physics. In 1977, as head of the chair at Racovita School, he retired.

Starting from 12 September 1970, thanks to the care and efforts of Constantin Nastase, Cula Racovita hosts the Ethnographic Museum of Mioveni, which is arranged according to the following structure: crafts, art objects, folk costumes, ceramics, elements of folk art, weapons, religious testimonies, carpentry, and woodworking tools, all sections totaling over 800 objects and exhibits.

In 2022, he was promoted from the rank of Brigadier General (one star) to Major General (two stars).

Constantin Nastase died in Milveni, Arges, Romania on 30 October 2023 at the age of 108 years, 149 days.
