Biography[]
Daniel Guzman Garcia was born in Villahermosa, Tolima, Colombia on 6 February 1897. On 27 April 1931, at age of 34, he secretly married Julia Rosa Marin. They had 12 children. He did not suffer from any major diseases and was capable of walking on his own without the need for a walker or a wheel chair. His only handicap was deafness. He attributed his longevity to having grown up near the snowed-covered mountains of Ruiz, enjoying thick hot chocolate, taking long walks, and the gentle breezes from the South of Cali. But, mainly, not to speak poorly of anybody. His wife died in December 1994. At that time, nine of his children were still alive: Daniel, Ligia, Nelly, Alirio, Nestor, Fulvio, Gonzalo, Beatriz, and Gloria.
His age was verified by Robert Young and Miguel Quesada and validated by the GRG on 22 March 2008. According to one of his daughters, Beatriz, ten days prior to his death he rose to have his breakfast and he fainted. They took him to a nearby hospital (Valley of the Lily Foundation). He apparently suffered a massive stroke - a Cerebral Aneurism (a pathological expansion of a left artery in the brain). He was quickly placed in intensive care at the hospital.
Guzman Garcia died in Cali, Colombia, on 21 May 2008 at the age of 111 years, 105 days. Following his death, the Department of Pathology of the Universidad del Valle took possession of his body. At the time of his death, he had 19 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
