Biography[]

David Bento Rodrigues was born in the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores, Portugal on 20 November 1911. As a boy, Bento worked the land as a farmer, growing his own crops and spending much of the day outdoors. He was 56 when he came to America in the fall of 1967 with his wife and children. Oldest son Joseph was the first of eight siblings who settled in Stoughton three years earlier. Bento was married to his wife, Ines, for 70 years until she died in 2008 at the age of 92, and soon thereafter he went to live with his daughter Aura, also of Stoughton. While his father died at an early age, his mother remained in the Azores until her death at the age of 98. When Bento first arrived in Stoughton, he looked for a job. At the time, Joseph worked as a cook at the old Stoughton Diner and was able to get his father a job as a custodian, where he worked for the next two decades until the diner closed 31 December 1984.[1]

David Bento Rodrigues died at Copley nursing home in Stoughton, Massachusetts, USA on 20 February 2016 at the age of 104 years, 90 days.[2] He was survived by five sons, three daughters, 21 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. [3]
