Dezsone Kovacs (née Margit Balogh) [Hungarian: Kovács Dezsőné Balogh Margit] (25 September 1906 – 13 May 2017) was a Hungarian supercentenarian who was the oldest living person in Hungary at the time of her death. Her age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).
Biography
Dezsőné Kovács was born as Margit Balogh in Berekböszörmény, Hajdú–Bihar County, Austria-Hungary (now Hungary), on 25 September 1906, to Zsigmond Balogh (1883–1959) and Margit Szabó (1889–1962). She was the oldest of five siblings and outlived them all. She grew up in Oradea, present-day Romania, where she attended elementary school. Margit also met her future husband there. In 1920, the family moved to Hajdúnánás, Hungary, after the Treaty of Trianon. She started to work as a shop assistant there. She married Dezső Kovács in 1927. Their daughter, Éva, was born a few years later. They moved to Kecskemét in 1956. Margit was widowed in 1984. As well as her daughter, she had two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
On her 110th birthday it was mentioned that she is a good-natured lady with a good health and extraordinary spiritual freshness. She lived alone in her flat, which is next to her daughter’s flat and she still helped in cooking. Margit wore glasses until she had a cataract operation on both of her eyes at the age of 90. Since then, she could read her favourite romantic novels without glasses. Besides reading, sewing was her other hobby. According to her, there’s no secret of longevity: „We can eat, drink and do everything we would like to and what we enjoy.”
On 30 July 2016, following the death of 111-year-old Mária Höffner, she became the oldest known living person in Hungary.
Dezsőné Kovács died in Kecskemét, Bács-Kiskun County, Hunrary, on 13 May 2017, at the age of 110 years, 230 days. Following her death, then 109-year-old Jánosné Bélik became the oldest known living person in Hungary.
