Domenica Ercolani-Cristoforo (3 July 1910 – 17 November 2023) was an Italian supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). She was the oldest living person in Italy at time of her death.

Biography[]

Domenica Ercolani was born in Urbino, Marche, Italy on 3 July 1910. In his family of peasant origins, all three brothers, except the eldest, lived to be over ninety.

She married Cristoforo Rupalti, a station manager. The couple had 2 children: Alessandra (born 1936), and Sisto a doctor, died of a tumour in 1994 at 45 years old. Domenica's husband died in 1986.

During the Second World War, she moved to Urbania with her daughter, while her husband was at the front.

After the war she moved to Pesaro with his family. In her life she was a housewife, she took care of her children, but she also liked gardening (she had a vegetable garden and flowers).

On 19 July 2019, with the death of Aldesina Rossi, she became the oldest living person in the Marche.

In July 2020, Ercolani celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian. On 30 March 2021, Ercolani received her first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, making her one of the oldest known people to receive it. Ercolani became the oldest known living person in Italy after the death of 112-year-old Angela Tiraboschi on 7 May 2022. She later became the oldest known living Italian-born person after the death of 112-year-old Delio Venturotti of Brazil on 1 June 2022.

Ercolani's age was verified by Alfredo Nocera, GRG Correspondent for Italy, and validated by the GRG on 22 April 2023.

On 3 July 2023, Ercolani celebrated her 113th birthday, becoming the first supercentenarian in Italy to do so since 22 March 2019, Anna Benericetti's 113th birthday. She was cared for by her daughter, Alessandra, with the help of her grandchildren, Marco and Luca.

Ercolani died from natural causes on 17 November 2023 in Pesaro, Marche, Italy at the age of 113 years, 137 days. Following her death, then 113-year-old Claudia Baccarini became the oldest living person in Italy.
