Biography[]
Dorothy Hodgson was born in Essex, England, UK, on 23 July 1897. Her mother died when she was 4 years old and she attended a girls' boarding school until the age of 14. After that, she worked as a nanny and later as a cook's helper and a clerk in a tea store.
She moved to Melfort, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1921. She met her husband Hugh Hodgson in 1924. They worked as farmers for a few years before being devastated by the Great Depression. They had six children, including Dorothy and Audrey, whom she had to raise by herself during WWII while her husband served in England.
After the war, the couple moved to Madison, Saskatchewan and operated a local phone office. They later moved to Alberta and then British Columbia. In 1999, she moved to Qualicum Beach, British Columbia. She lived in her own apartment until moving into the Qualicum Manor care home at the age of 107. She was still physically and mentally active until shortly before her death. She often wrote short poems, painted flowers on gift cards, and played cards in her final years at the home.
Dorothy Hodgson passed away on 7 December 2007 at the age of 110 years, 37 days. Her age was verified by Robert Young and validated by the GRG on 3 January 2008.
