Biography
Dorrie Aber-Noyek was born as Esther Dora Bodesky in Lancashire, England, UK, on 15 February 1907. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and then taught history and literature to fifth-graders.
Dorrie met her first husband, Russian-born Nathan Aber, at a wedding, and they married in June 1931. The couple had two children, Samuel and Thelma. Nathan joined the English Royal Air Force in 1939, and the family moved to Montreal, Canada soon after. Dorrie made sandwiches for soldiers at the canteens.
After World War 2 was over, the family settled in Toronto, Canada, and Dorrie started volunteering for Sunnybrook Hospital. Every summer from 1946 to 1965, when her husband retired, the couple would go to Miami Beach for a vacation. The warm Floridian weather appeared to ease Dorrie's arthritis, so following her husband's retirement, they settled in Hallandale Beach, Florida.
Nathan Aber died in 1975 after 44 years of marriage. It wasn't until after his death that Dorrie started volunteering again. She chose to volunteer at the hospital where her husband had spent his final illness. In 1985, she married Bernard Noyek. By 2003, she had reduced her volunteering schedule down to once a week.
On her 110th birthday in 2017, she had a celebration with family, friends and local dignitaries in attendance. She also received a letter from HM Queen Elizabeth II congratulating her on celebrating her 110th birthday.
Dorrie Aber-Noyek died in Sunrise, Florida, USA, on 26 June 2017, at the age of 110 years, 131 days.
