Centenarian

Dundo Bozo Kralj [Croatian: Dundo Božo Kralj] (9 October 1915 – 30 January 2023) was a Croatian centenarian who was the oldest known living man in Croatia at the time of his death. He was also the oldest living veteran of World War II in Croatia.

Biography[]

Dundo Bozo Kralj was born in the village of Pridvorje in the central part of the municipality of Konavle, under the slopes of the mountain Snijeznica, Dubrovnik-Neretva County, Austria-Hungary, (present-day Croatia) on 9 October 1915. He had six sisters and one brother. When he was only three years and two months old, his mother died from the effects of the Spanish flu. After a few years, his father remarried, then Bozo Kralj got a stepmother, she was as caring towards him as she was towards her children and did not differentiate between her children and him.

In 1938, he was called up for the army. It was for the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and King Petar II Karadjordjevic. He boarded the submarine with 50 crew members, among them five officers. He came as a replacement, but not as a sailor, but as a waiter "at the service of an officer and commander". Although he did not participate in the battles (because he had an easier task in the army) he carried the title of war veteran.

He married his wife Ana in 1949. From the 1951 he volunteered for the Hydrometeorological Institute in Zagreb and every month he sent them his reports on the current situation the amount of precipitation, thunder and winds. He voluntarily engaged in this hobby for 67 years, that is, until he was 103 years. In October 2017 he had three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He became the oldest known living man in Croatia, following the death of 109-year-old Josip Krsul on 5 March 2021.

Bozo Kralj died in his native village of Pridvorje, Dubrovnik-Neretva County, Croatia on 30 January 2023, at the age of 107 years, 113 days.
