Edna Strickland (6 March 1911 – 16 January 2024) was a British supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Edna Strickland was born in Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England, UK, on 6 March 1911. At a young age, she moved to Kensington. At the age of 14, she left school for an apprenticeship as she became a talented dressmaker.

At some point, Strickland moved to Brentford. She worked in the area as a tailor and seamstress. During World War II, her company was evacuated, but she decided to stay with her mother and work in a factory which built aircrafts. In 1946, she married Bill "Dudley" Strickland. The couple had two children. In the 1950s, she did a lot of sowing at home to support the family. After retiring in the 1970s, she moved to Eastbourne, East Sussex.

Later Life[]

Strickland's husband died in 1984. In 2001, she moved to Hounslow, London, to be closer with her family. In March 2021, Strickland celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian.

In early 2022, Strickland and her entire household contracted COVID-19. According to her family, she was the "least affected" out of everyone in her household. Strickland later recovered, making her one of the oldest known survivors of the disease.

Strickland died in Hounslow, London, England, UK, on 16 January 2024, at the age of 112 years, 316 days. At the time of her death, she was was the oldest known living person in London, and the second-oldest known living person in the United Kingdom, behind Ethel Caterham. Strickland's age was verified by Oliver Trim, GRG-UK Correspondent, Bryony Ashford, and Paula Strickland, and validated by the GRG on 8 March 2023.
