Elcira Arteaga Garcia [Spanish: Elcira Arteaga García] (19 September 1907 – 22 September 2017) was a Bolivian supercentenarian who was the oldest known living person in Bolivia at the time of her death. Her age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) and LongeviQuest (LQ).
Biography[]
Elcira Arteaga Garcia was born in Cochamba Department, Bolivia, on 19 September 1907 (claimed 22 September 1907), to Timoteo Arteaga and Rosa García. She was the eldest out of eleven siblings.
At the age of 18, she passed the mandatory training as an elementary school teacher where she moved to Arque to train at the provincial teaching requirement. She began teaching kindergarten at the American Institute, finish first grade at a school founded by Adela Zamudio, and finally, moving to the Achá School. She was very passionate about teaching; she loved welcoming children and teach them to be literate. Sometime before she turned 20, she met Germán Busch, a former president of Bolivia who served from 1937–1939. She recalled that she would often engage in casual conversations with him during his visits and vacations in Arque while he was still a student at the Military Academy.
She married César Arzabe Reque. He left to go fight in the Chaco War, spending a year in the front, leaving her and their two children, Wilde Reque and Hilda Reque. After he returned, they went on and had nine more children, totalling 11 children.
On 19 August 2015, following the death of 110-year-old Alicia Tobar Loayza, she became the oldest known living person in Bolivia.
Elcira Arteaga Garcia died in Cochamba, Cochamba Department, Bolivia, on 22 September 2017, at the age of 110 years, 3 days. At the time of her death, she had 6 children, 18 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
