Centenarian

Elemer Spiegler [Hungarian: Spiegler Elemér] (24 August 1912 – 6 March 2019) was an Austrian-Hungarian centenarian who was the oldest known living man in Hungary at the time of his death. He was also the Hungary's oldest Holocaust survivor.

Biography[]

Elemer Spiegler was born in Oberwart, Burgenland, Austria-Hungary (present-day Austria) on 24 August 1912.

He trained as a shoemaker and was enrolled in the Hungarian Army in 1935. The following year, he finished his military service and in the same year his father died, he then began work at a shoe factory in 1939.

In 1940, he was pushed into forced labor in Transylvania and was deported to the Mauthausen concentration camp, where he survived for two years but lost his remaining family there.

On 31 March 1946, he married another Holocaust survivor, Rozalia Weltlingerr (1921–1996). The couple had two children: Eva (born January 1948) and Tibor (born July 1954).

He attributed his longevity to the fact that he still worked at the age of 92, making shoes for his grandchildren. He always ate little for dinner and had a proper night's sleep afterwards.

He became the oldest known living man in Hungary upon the death of 108-year-old Antal Ribnikar on 24 March 2018.

Elemer Spiegler died in Szombathely, Vas, Hungary on 6 March 2019 at the age of 106 years, 194 days. Following his death, then-105-year-old Jozsef Kasalyak became the oldest known living man in Hungary.
