Early Life and Family[]

Elizabeth Brown was born as Elizabeth McEachern in Fayette County, Georgia, USA on 11 October 1891. Her father, Pleasant Marion McEachern, joined the Company I of the 10th Georgia Infantry Regiment in April 1862 (aged 16) and fought during the American Civil War. Her mother was Frances Hudson McEachern. She grew up working on her parents' 84-acre farm in Kenwood, Fayette County.

Brown later attended State Normal School (now the University of Georgia) and became a teacher. She taught at Ebenezer School. At one time, she was the only teacher of the school for seven grades.

It was also in Ebenezer School that she met her future husband Marcus Lafayette Brown. They married on 1 January 1914. The couple had five children: Dorothy B. Brewer (who also became a teacher), Rudene B. Hooten, Willette Brown (who died in 2010), James B. Brown, and Shirley Brown. The family moved to Fayetteville in 1941. Brown was widowed in 1957, but would never left her house.

Later Life[]

At the age of 85, Brown took her first airplane trip. At the age of 99, she broke her leg and went to hospital for the first time. In her centenarian years, she enjoyed quilting and crocheting.

In June 2001, Brown joined the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She took care of her garden until 2002, and credited her longevity to faithfulness, hard work, and clean living. In August 2002, her health began to decline, as she was injured in a fall.

Brown's age was verified by Filipe Prista Lucas and Robert Young, and (posthumously) validated by the GRG on 5 May 2006.

Elizabeth Brown died in Fayetteville, Fayette County, Georgia, USA on 3 January 2003, at the age of 111 years, 84 days. She was buried in Fayetteville, Fayette County, Georgia.
